Reels on Wheels

Who we are

Reels on Wheels brings a wide and varied selection of innovative and artistic films into communities in a way that encourages maximum audience participation, engagement and life-long learning opportunities. The importance of these events within the communities involved is evident from organisers’ reports and letters. One of our pilot scheme participants remarked, “They liked the community aspect...the atmosphere, the fact they could walk there, the refreshments, meeting people.” In other words, Reels on Wheels offers much more than just a night at the cinema.

Another village hall promoter wrote to say: “Many of our residents are elderly and having an entertainment on their doorstep, such as you provide, truly enhances their quality of life. We are a very close community and these evenings give us more chances in which to socialise. I hope your activities can continue as I am sure that many other villages such as ours appreciate the cultural opportunities which you can provide. Arts should be brought to the people in this way and we thoroughly support all your programs.”

Reels on Wheels provides an extensive menu of films, all necessary equipment – thanks to funding from the UK Film Council – and on-site technical assistance at the event. All the promoter has to do is advertise the film, decide whether to do a themed evening (the film Chocolat has been especially popular) and set out the chairs and refreshments.
